What does this indicator measure ?
This indicator presents the total annual number of cultural arts establishments and the total annual number of cultural arts employees for Collin, Dallas, and Denton Counties. These data are obtained from the County Business Patterns series, a program of the U.S. Census Bureau. Specifically, this indicator reports annual data for three categories identified within the North American Industry Classification system:
- Performing Arts Companies (code 7111)
- Independent Artists, Writers, and Performers (code 7115)
- Museums, Historical Sites, and Similar Institutions (code 712)
These three categories are specifically identified within the Arts, Entertainment, & Recreation industry description (industry code 71).
Why is this indicator important?
This indicator provides longitudinal information on the number of cultural arts establishments and the number of cultural arts employees present within the three largest counties of the eight counties in the Dallas Primary Metropolitan Statistical Area (PMSA). This information is useful for better understanding the cultural arts industry’s economic impact on its community. In addition, this information allows for analysis of changes in the arts industry’s presence within the counties of interest.
How are we doing?
Data on the cultural arts employees and establishments in Collin, Dallas and Denton Counties report the following:
- As expected among these three counties, the overwhelming majority of the cultural arts industry is located in Dallas County. However, as described below, the arts industry sector is growing faster in both Collin and Denton Counties.
- Between 2000 and 2003, the aggregate number of cultural arts establishments in Collin County (includes all three categories listed above) increased 42.9%.
- Between 2000 and 2003, the aggregate number of cultural arts establishments in Dallas County (includes all three categories listed above) increased 14.1%.
- Between 2000 and 2003, the aggregate number of cultural arts establishments in Denton County (includes all three categories listed above) increased 38.9%.
