Arts & Culture
Equitable Access to Cultural Resources
Community-based cultural centers
Community-based cultural centers

What does this indicator measure?

This indicator measures the availability of participatory arts and culture opportunities in the community.  The City of Dallas maintains a number of community recreation centers throughout the city, at which residents can take arts classes and participate in community sports classes and leagues.  This indicator reports the type of opportunities available at each center, as indicated in the City of Dallas Calendar.  The City of Dallas Office of Cultural Affairs also maintains several neighborhood community cultural centers whose offerings are also reported.

Why is this indicator important?
A community’s arts and cultural experiences are broader than the big-budget productions at the symphony and opera halls or large sports arenas.  Community-based opportunities for artistic expression and cultural activities are important to develop a more personal and participatory approach to integrating arts and culture into everyday life.  According to a 2004 Urban Institute Study, community recreation and cultural centers are positively correlated with a community’s social capital and residents’ satisfaction with their neighborhood.  The opportunity for participation in arts, sports, and other cultural activities offered at community recreation centers helps to promote a healthy lifestyle.  Moreover, such activities can serve to increase community participation and decrease adolescent crime.

How are we doing?
There are 19 community recreation centers throughout the city of Dallas.  Each location offers some combination of arts classes and sports/fitness classes and leagues for both adults and children.  In addition, four Cultural Centers offer theatrical performances and art galleries.  The Ice House and South Dallas Cultural Center additionally offer art classes for adults and children. The chart below details the offerings at each center.
