Home Loan Denial Rates by Race/Ethnicity & Income, Dallas County, 2004

6.2.4.c.gif

This graph shows the proportion of Black, Hispanic, and White mortgage applicants who, upon submitting a complete mortgage application for consideration are denied a loan by the lending institution, further broken down by income category.  For example, among Black applicants with a household income less than $30,000 per year, 44.5% were denied a loan by the lending institution upon submission of a complete application.  This result does not necessarily imply racism on the part of the banks, as this subset of applicants may suffer disproportionately  from poor credit history, unstable employment history, and insufficient income to pay the mortgage on the loan amount they are requesting.  However, the fact remains that this subset of applicants is not succeeding in obtaining mortgage financing.
